giving Thanks

With the start of fall upon us, I can think of nothing other than Thanksgiving.  This has always been my family's favorite holiday.  I feel that we were always taught to be thankful, good times and bad.  Thanking God for all our many blessings but today I was truly reminded of this while reading an article in the Catholic Telegraph.

I read an article written by Jeanne Hunt titled Grumpy hateful or humble grateful.  Well if nothing else the title caught my eye.  Jeanne goes on to write about 4 steps of gratitude.  I just want to stress here that this is my take away, I am not trying to rewrite what was  written here but jumping ahead to the fourth step, "No matter how difficult or mysterious our life gets, there is something to be grateful for.  Even when we do not feel like it, we should speak the words anyway.  This is the leap of faith.  Nothing shows our faith more than in those moments when we reach out to God in gratitude when we can not fathom why things are so tough."  She quoted Luke from the bible writing to the Thessalonians, 1 5:18, "give thanks in all circumstances for this is the will of God for you in Jesus Christ."

The thought of giving thanks during challenging times is a challenge in it self.  It take a special leap in our faith to be able to see and find the good in life when struggling.  But this is in fact what Luke was saying from a prison cell, telling us to never cease praying and thanking God because we have many other blessings outside of those prison walls, outside from our difficult situations.  So let us not just think to thank God when things are going our way but to take that leap of faith and be always thankful.
